This is a new section of the manual, and is devoted to tips
and techniques for using OpenUsing efficiently and powerfully.
If you have a tip that you would like to share with other OpenUsing
users, please email
me!
The best tips will be added to this page, along with the name
of the contributor.
Finder Tips
- Set the view for the OpenUsing Folder to "as list",
and sort by name. This view matches the plugins loading order.
- You really only need to display the name and kind columns
(from "View Options...").
- If you use the extended
type list feature, include the comments column!
Performance Tips
- Remember, the more items you place in the OpenUsing Folder,
the longer it takes to load.
- Don't skimp on your disk cache (as setup in the Memory control
panel).
- Use type sensitive configuration
to reduce the number of items scanned.
File Exchange
Do you know about the File Exchange control panel that is part
of standard MacOS? It allows you to specify settings for :
- PC Exchange - mapping file name suffixes to Macintosh file
type and creator codes
- File Translation - opening Macintosh files that were created
by applications that you don't have.
I recommend setting up File Exchange as required before turning
to OpenUsing. Use OpenUsing to augment File Exchange, not to replace
it.
